Music 0-3

First steps in music

As a mother who has experienced the early stages of my baby’s life, I know how the first few months are a really big (but wonderful) challenge for any parent. If you are already reading this page, you deserve a great BRAVO!

Now that this new and challenging phase has ended, you may feel ready to help your baby develop their innate musical potential as they begin their next developmental stage.

You are in the right place!

First steps in music is my course for families with children aged 0-3 that will help you support your child’s musical development with original songs and new creative ideas.

What makes this course different is that it goes deeper into your child’s understanding of music, drawing upon the latest neurological and musical research. This class brings music to your family in a special and fun way and is a fabulous way to bond with your child.

Is this you?

  • you’re looking for a new and interesting way to introduce music to your child;
  • you want to share music with them but you’re tired of the same old nursery rhymes;
  • music has always been something special in your life and you want to find a creative way to experience it with your children;
  • you believe that musical learning supports your child’s general development.

Our approach is based on Gordon’s Music Learning Theory and uses rich and creative music where fun is at the core of the learning process.

My philosophy:

  • I believe in having no more than 11 children per class as this allows the teacher to follow each child’s needs and development better;
  • Promoting rich and interesting music shouldn’t compromise the fun and creative process of learning;
  • I create musical games and songs specifically designed to stimulate the cognitive and psychomotor development of children;
  • Parents/carers participation is encouraged in my classes to help grow the child’s passion for music;
  • I use instrumental and non-verbal music to enrich children’s musical vocabulary;
  • My classes encourage improvisation and individual exploration.

The first three years of life provide an incredible learning window, important not only for the development of cognitive and psychomotor skills but also for the musicality of your child. If guided in a creative and playful environment, children can develop their musical potential in their own time and free from stress. My goal is to be a musical guide for your child and to support their learning path. Music Tree’s teachers sing, move and interact with the children, offering suggestions to parents and carers as to how to create a musical bond with them both in the class and at home.

At Music Tree, we base our classes on Gordon’s Music Learning Theory. We sing songs in all the modes and meters of western music, compose our own songs and create musical dialogues to support children’s creativity and responses to music.
Studies in music education and neurology suggest that all children are born with an innate musical potential. As in the development of language, we can support these skills by creating a rich and creative environment in our sessions. Our goal, when children are very young, is to create a magical experience through sounds, non-verbal communication, movement and dance.

My little one really loves the music class. We have been to a lot of different ones and she normally seems a little bit overwhelmed. However, in this class, she is completely comfortable and smiles from start to finish (and is super happy and chatty afterwards). It’s our favourite class of the week!”

– Hannah, Review on Hoop

I took my daughter from 3 months till 15 months old and she simply loved Tiziana’s classes, and so did I. They are unlike any other classes I’ve been to: really about experimenting and interacting with sounds, rhythm and music, allowing each child to express their response without any expectation. Each class is fun and also builds from one to another to enable a child to play more and more with music. I wish I could still attend and would recommend her unequivocally to every child and parent!

– Edwina, Ayla’s mum (15 months old)

Are your classes based on Gordon’s Music Learning Theory (MLT)?

Yes! MLT is an explanation of the process behind music learning. Based on an extensive body of research and practical field testing by Edwin E. Gordon and others, MLT focuses on children’s natural music aptitude development. Music also supports language, attention and concentration, non-verbal communication, motor and socio-emotional development.

What is the main principle of MLT?

The main principle of MLT is that we learn music in the same way we learn language. Children need to be exposed to a rich music environment to develop their musical potential (not just nursery rhymes!) in the same way as they are exposed to the complexity of language when they are newborn babies. That’s why we sing songs that are composed in all tonalities, modes and meters.

Why do you sing songs without words in the classes?

Our brain naturally focuses on language to understand the meaning of lyrics, often reaching musical elements after the words. Spoken language is predominant in children’s lives that why during our classes we mainly use melodic and rhythmic songs without words, sung with neutral syllables like PAM or BAM. Singing without words helps children focus directly on melody, rhythm and harmony.

Why do you sing PAM-BAM?

PAM-BAM are neutral syllables and children can repeat them very easily (P-B-A are some of the first sounds pronounced by a child). In this way, when they are ready, a musical dialogue can be created with the teacher. Songs are short so that babies and toddlers can follow them as their concentration is still developing.

Why a non-verbal environment?

We leave space for silence after every song but that moment is not wasted! It’s actually full of the sounds that children have just listened to and it’s exactly at that moment they start developing their internal musical listening and musical understanding.

Why are children free to move in the room and why are there no specific activities that you teach them?

Children need to listen to music in the way they prefer to create a positive relationship with it. To develop their musical skills, they need to move in relation to rhythm and music. As they grow, they move in different ways according to their age and personality. We follow each child’s development and that’s why the activities are based on children’s natural motor responses to sounds and music.

First stages of children’s musical development

Absorption: children listen and absorb sounds of music from the environment.

Random responses: children move and babble in response to the sounds from music in the environment, but they are not fully conscious of doing it.

Purposeful responses: children try to relate movement and vocalisations to the sounds of music in the environment. They are starting to imitate intentionally.
